A RAINBOW OF MALAMUTE COAT COLORS
*This color guide is just to give an example for those who are wondering what colors the majestic malamutes come in.
White is the only solid color allowed by the AKC Alaskan Malmute Standard. Both the guard hairs and the undercoat are white with no other color ever present. A cream colored mask could be visable while the face is still all white. *Note: this happy girl is Theia, a pup produced by Siren and Ludo in 2013.
A silver coated Alaskan malamute is the lightest shade of gray. Silver malamutes could be mistaken at birth for a solid white, but will begin to show the light gray guard hairs as they grow. A silver malmute will have a silver colored guard coat with a white undercoat. *Note: Our dear friend Christy has given us permission to use this picture of Admiral one of her beautiful babies. The gray coat comes in different shades of gray; from a light gray (which is sometimes referred to as wolf gray), which has been mistaken as a seal and white coat; to a dark gray that has been mistaken as a black and white coat. The guard hairs on a gray malamute are gray with either a light gray, cream, or white undercoat. At times there could be some all black hairs evident; but at a distance a gray malamute will always appear gray. *Note: Our dear friend Christy has given us permission to use this picture of Kegan one of her beautiful babies. A seal coated malamute is usually mistaken for a black and white malamute or a gray malamute. Unlike the gray malamute who will always appear gray even from a distance; the seal malamute could appear to be black and white from a far, but upon closer examination the undercoat will be light in color. Seal and white coated mals have black guard hairs with a white or cream colored undercoat. At birth it is difficult to distinguish the seal pup from the true black and white pup. *Note: this handsome boy is my baby Riddick who I lost unexpectedly and unjustly....I will always love him unconditionally and miss him every single day of my life! Rest in peace my beautiful boy and run free in heaven's meadow! I will always treasure your memory Riddick!
Black and white coated malamutes are TRUE black. Their guard hairs are black and the undercoat is either black or dark gray. Remember...if the malamute has a light colored undercoat then it will be considered a Seal coated malamute. ;) *Note: this is Chinook, a past pup produced by Siren and Ludo in 2013. Thank you Romero family for the picture! ;)
Agouti is more of a color pattern than a color alone. The agouti coated malamute is found in blacks, grays, and reds. The coat is banded in color and weaved throughout the mal. The black agouti has a coat that is banded black with light bands; the lighter bands could be of beige, cream, tan, peach, or red color. Facial markings on an agouti will always be "dirty" looking. *NOTE: The above Black agouti puppy is Mario he was born out of Rocket & Ludo in 2013
A sable coated malamute has black or gray guard hairs with a reddish undercoat and trimmings. Some of them may seem to have “dirty faces” as their white markings may not be truly white but instead have a red or cream colored cast. Some sables are very dark, others are much lighter. *Note: Meet Alaska; she is a stunning sable coated female that belongs to a dear friend of ours Jennifer! You could learn more about Alaskan and Jennifer at California King's Alaskan Malamutes! Thank you Jen
